President’s Message

It is my honour to serve as the 2025-2026 President of the Canadian Academy of Periodontology (CAP).

As the national voice for periodontists in Canada, the CAP’s mission is to promote excellence in periodontics and improve public periodontal health. CAP aims to support its members and encourage peer interactions among like-minded individuals with a strong interest in periodontics. CAP brings together periodontics, general dentistry, and dental hygiene as we work towards a brighter future for our specialty.

The CAP Executive works diligently to promote our specialty and provide value to our members. I am delighted to work with Dr. Jonathan Bouwer, President-Elect; Dr. Disha Nagpal, Treasurer; Dr. David Chvartszaid, Secretary-Editor; Dr. Matthew Morris, Member at Large; and Dr. Trudy Nwachukwu, Immediate Past-President. This dedicated team brings energy and commitment to their roles, and together we will provide a strong voice for periodontists across Canada.

The CAP Executive will maintain its support for popular initiatives such as the “Jump the Gap with CAP” and “Zoom in with CAP” webinars that promote team building within dental practices and strengthen relationships with referring offices.

We look to expand the Fellowship/Mentorship Program that connects residents and periodontists across Canada as a way to exchange knowledge and support residents as they transition to private practice.

In response to member requests, we have introduced new committees, including the Economics and Insurance Committee, to address related issues. The Education Committee looks to connect with colleagues in the graduate periodontal programs and introduce the CAP to residents early in their periodontal careers. We are completing the website updates and look forward to enhancing our digital presence through social media and relaunching a digital version of the CAPsule newsletter. Please continue to let us know how we can better serve you.

The CAP hosted a successful joint meeting with the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) in October. It featured engaging lectures and learning sessions delivered by world-class speakers. I was pleased to see many of you at our Lunch-and-Learn and AGM. The AAP expressed both their appreciation for our partnership and interest in future collaborations.

We look forward to seeing you at the 69th Annual Meeting at the Prince George Hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia, June 4-6, 2026. Our engaging panel of speakers includes Dr. Sam Malkinson, Dr. Aditya Patel, Dr. James Brady, Dr. Sara Gordon, Dr. Pierre-Luc Michaud, Dr. Tom Viola, Dani Botbyl and Dalhousie Graduate Periodontal Residents. Please check the website regularly for registration details.

I look forward to serving our membership this year and welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at canadian.academy.perio@gmail.com
